Day 5: Nyakalengija to Nyabitaba Hut (2,651m)

Your Rwenzori trekking adventure officially begins today. After an early breakfast, head to the Rwenzori Mountaineering Services headquarters for a comprehensive briefing on the trekking guidelines and safety regulations for hiking the mystical Rwenzori Mountains. From here, your trail leads you through the vibrant Bakonzo community, where you’ll pass through lush banana plantations, local homesteads, and picturesque gardens en route to the Rwenzori National Park gate for registration.

Once inside the park, the Central Circuit Trail begins. You’ll trek through dense tropical montane forest, characterized by towering trees draped in moss, vibrant undergrowth, and echoing birdcalls. This lush forest is home to a surprising variety of wildlife, including black-and-white colobus monkeys, blue monkeys, elusive duikers, and—if lucky—chimpanzees. Keen eyes might even spot the rare three-horned chameleon, a reptilian gem of the Rwenzoris.

The hike is both enriching and scenic, offering an immersive introduction to the unique ecosystem of the “Mountains of the Moon.” By late afternoon, you’ll arrive at Nyabitaba Hut, perched amidst the forest canopy. Settle in for dinner and an overnight stay, surrounded by the tranquil sounds of the Rwenzori wilderness.

6

Day 6: Nyabitaba Hut to John Matte Hut (3,505m)

After an early breakfast at Nyabitaba Hut, you’ll set off on a thrilling ascent toward John Matte Hut, venturing deeper into the majestic heart of the Rwenzori Mountains. Your trek begins with a descent through a steep forested trail, leading you to the Kurt Scharfer Bridge, a stunning crossing point situated at the confluence of the Mubuku and Bujuku Rivers. This dramatic location offers a perfect pause to appreciate the raw beauty and serenity of the alpine wilderness.

Continuing the trek, the trail winds through a dense bamboo forest, transitioning into a challenging stretch of slippery moss-covered rocks and root-filled paths, testing both your endurance and balance. You’ll reach Nyamileju Hut, a resting point where many trekkers stop to catch their breath and take in the surrounding beauty. From this vantage point, on a clear day, you can catch your first glimpses of the Margherita Peak—the highest point in Uganda—as well as the impressive Mount Stanley massif, both offering an inspiring backdrop that energizes the journey ahead.

As you push forward through moorland terrain dotted with giant heathers and lobelias, the scenery becomes increasingly alpine and otherworldly. The final stretch leads you to John Matte Hut, located at 3,505 meters, where you’ll be welcomed with warm meals and a well-deserved rest. Settle in for the evening and soak in the chilly mountain air as you prepare for the next leg of your expedition through the Rwenzoris.

7

Day 7: John Matte to Bujuku Hut (3,962m)

After an early breakfast at John Matte Hut, you’ll embark on a full day of trekking deeper into the mystical heart of the Rwenzori Mountains. Today’s hike covers approximately 6 kilometers and typically takes between 5 to 7 hours, depending on trail conditions and your pace. The trail begins by crossing the Bujuku River, followed by a descent into the renowned Bigo Bog—a vast stretch of alpine wetland that is both challenging and captivating. Strategically placed wooden boardwalks help you navigate through the marshy terrain, though sections may still require careful steps.

As you ascend, the landscape opens up to reveal panoramic vistas of snow-capped peaks that surround the high-altitude Bujuku Valley. You’ll pass close to the shimmering Lake Bujuku, its cold, clear waters nestled beneath towering cliffs and giant groundsels. Here, the alpine savannah vegetation becomes more pronounced, with strange and beautiful plant life that gives the Rwenzoris their nickname—“The Mountains of the Moon.”

Reaching Bujuku Hut, perched at an altitude of 3,962 meters, you’ll be rewarded with breathtaking views of Mount Speke, Mount Stanley, and Mount Baker, which form a dramatic amphitheater of rock and glacier. This high-altitude haven offers a serene and rugged place to relax, enjoy a warm meal, and prepare for the strenuous and exhilarating trek ahead. The night will be spent here, resting in the tranquil isolation of the mountains.

8

Day 8: Bujuku Hut to Elena Hut (4,541m)

After an early breakfast at Bujuku Hut, you will set out on one of the most dramatic and scenic sections of the Rwenzori trekking circuit. This stage of the trek covers a 4km stretch and typically takes between 5 to 7 hours, depending on your pace and trail conditions. The journey begins with a steady ascent through dense giant groundsel vegetation, leading you into the increasingly alpine terrain that defines the upper reaches of the Rwenzori.

You’ll climb the slopes west of Lake Bujuku, navigating the sides of the Upper Bigo Bog as you rise toward the imposing Scott-Elliot Pass at 4,372 meters. This ascent is physically demanding, with rocky, sometimes muddy trails and a few swampy patches that require careful footing. As you gain altitude, the air becomes thinner and colder, and the landscape transforms into a surreal world of jagged rocks, mist, and alpine flora.

Once you reach the pass, the trail presents a metal ladder that helps you scale the steeper, more precarious sections above a steep gully. At the top, the path splits into two routes: the left fork descends toward Kitandara Lakes, while your journey continues along the right fork, climbing higher toward Elena Hut. This stretch is rugged and challenging, threading through large boulders and narrow ledges as it leads to the base of Mount Stanley.

Elena Hut, perched on a rocky ridge at 4,541 meters, is the highest sleeping point of the Rwenzori trekking experience. Though the hut is simple and set in a cold, wind-swept environment, it offers dramatic views over the high peaks—Mount Baker, Mount Speke, and, on clear days, the glaciers of Mount Stanley itself. It’s a place of striking solitude and raw natural beauty, and serves as your base camp for those aiming to summit Margherita Peak the following day. You’ll enjoy a hot dinner and rest overnight, preparing for the most technical and thrilling part of the trek.

9

Day 9: Elena Hut to Margherita Peak (5,109m) – Descend to Kitandara Hut (4,023m)

This is the most demanding yet thrilling day of the Rwenzori trekking adventure, as it marks your ascent to Margherita Peak, the highest point of Mount Stanley and the Rwenzori Mountains, standing tall at 5,109 meters. You will rise as early as 2:00 AM, fueled with a hot breakfast, and begin your summit push by 3:00 AM, guided by headlamps and the cold alpine air.

The trail from Elena Hut traverses the Stanley Plateau, a wide, icy expanse where ropes, crampons, and ice axes are essential. Your experienced guides will lead you step-by-step across glacial ice and rugged rock, ensuring your safety while navigating the steep, technical terrain. You’ll ascend via fixed ropes over rocky ridges and icy cliffs, slowly making your way to the Margherita Glacier—the most technically challenging segment of the climb. This section demands physical endurance, mental focus, and trust in your gear, but the reward is immense.

Reaching Margherita Peak, you’ll find yourself standing on the third highest point in Africa, greeted by jaw-dropping panoramic views of Lake Ireen, Mount Speke, and a sweeping vista of jagged summits, alpine valleys, and glacial features. It’s a moment of triumph and awe, a once-in-a-lifetime summit that few ever achieve. You’ll take a moment to celebrate, photograph the achievement, and begin your descent.

After safely making your way back down to Elena Hut, you’ll rest briefly and enjoy a well-deserved lunch before continuing your descent through the Scott-Elliot Pass—one of the most stunning and dramatic landscapes of the Rwenzori. The trail to Kitandara Hut is steep, winding through glacial valleys and open moorlands, eventually revealing the serene Kitandara Lakes nestled beneath towering cliffs.

Tonight, you will overnight at Kitandara Hut, a peaceful alpine refuge surrounded by misty peaks and still waters. This leg of the trek allows you to recover from the summit and reflect on the incredible journey you’ve undertaken. However, if your group’s strength or weather conditions call for a slower pace, you may choose to rest an additional night at Elena Hut before proceeding to Kitandara.

10

Day 10: Kitandara Hut to Guy Yeoman Hut (3,505m)

After an early morning breakfast at Kitandara Hut, you will begin your descent from the glacial alpine zones into the lower elevations of the Rwenzori Mountains. This day’s trek typically takes 6 to 8 hours, traversing some of the most historically and ecologically significant sections of the Central Circuit Trail.

The trail first takes you along the base of Mount Baker, navigating a rugged and often slippery path that requires steady footing and patience. You will ascend sharply up the headwall that rises from the Kitandara Valley, leading toward the Freshfield Pass—a windswept alpine plateau that offers expansive views across the southern Rwenzori range and, on a clear day, even into the Congo.

From the pass, the trail becomes a long, challenging stretch, winding down through muddy terrain and moorlands. This section passes through significant historic and cultural landmarks, including Kabamba, Akhendahi, and the Bujongolo rock shelters, which once served as the base camp for the renowned 1906 expedition led by the Duke of Abruzzi. These rock outcrops and shelters, still scarred by the early explorers’ presence, are a vivid reminder of Rwenzori’s place in mountaineering history.

As you continue trekking through these remote and scenic zones, surrounded by ancient trees, giant heathers, and mist-covered cliffs, you’ll gradually descend toward the Mubuku River valley. Your final destination for the day is the Guy Yeoman Hut, nestled along the banks of the river and framed by towering cliffs and thick vegetation.

This hut provides a rustic yet tranquil setting for your overnight stay. Surrounded by cascading waterfalls and the sounds of the rushing river, it’s the perfect place to unwind, enjoy a warm dinner, and rest your weary legs after another memorable day in the legendary Mountains of the Moon.

11

Day 11: Guy Yeoman Hut to Nyabitaba to Nyakalengija (2,651m)

On this final day of your incredible 12 Days Gorillas & Hiking Uganda, you will begin your descent from Guy Yeoman Hut after an early breakfast. The trail leads you through the enchanting bamboo forests and dense vegetation, descending gradually into the lower montane zones of the Rwenzori Mountains. As you make your way down, you’ll be surrounded by a symphony of nature—from the distant roar of waterfalls to the vibrant bird calls echoing through the forest.

Along the trail, you’ll pass scenic highlights such as the Kinchuchu and Mubuku Rivers, whose sparkling waters snake their way through the valleys. The area is also known for its spectacular floral diversity, offering beautiful sightings of wildflowers and high-altitude plants that create a striking contrast with the deep green bamboo groves. You will also encounter the thundering Kabamba Falls, a hidden gem along this descending path that provides an awe-inspiring natural backdrop for photos and reflection.

After approximately four hours of descent, you will arrive at Nyabitaba Hut for a short rest. Here, you’ll have the opportunity to make a brief detour to Lake Mahoma, a serene crater lake tucked away within the forest. The optional 40-minute visit to the lake offers peaceful views, often mirrored with the reflections of surrounding trees, and it’s a perfect way to conclude your high-altitude journey with a final moment of serenity and beauty.

After your Lake Mahoma exploration, return to Nyabitaba Hut and begin the final leg of your descent through the lower rainforest zone. The trail eventually exits the park, arriving back at Nyakalengija, the starting point of your trek. Here, you will be warmly received by your driver guide who will transfer you to your hotel, marking the end of your unforgettable Rwenzori mountaineering journey—an expedition filled with challenge, beauty, and the timeless magic of Uganda’s Mountains of the Moon.

12

Day 12: Nyakalengija to Kampala / Entebbe International Airport

After an early breakfast and a heartfelt goodbye to the majestic Rwenzori ranges, you’ll check out of your lodge or hotel in Nyakalengija, bringing your incredible 12 Days Gorillas & Rwenzori Hiking Uganda to its final chapter. As you begin your return journey, you’ll be driven comfortably through the winding roads of Western Uganda, a region rich with lush landscapes, tea plantations, crater lakes, and rural homesteads that offer one last glimpse of the country’s natural beauty and cultural charm.

Along the way, you’ll make a brief stopover in Fort Portal, a charming town nestled in the shadows of the Rwenzori Mountains, known for its cool climate and stunning vistas. Depending on the timing and your energy levels, you may enjoy a quick refreshment or stretch your legs while soaking in the scenic beauty of this tranquil region.

The drive continues eastward toward Kampala and onward to Entebbe International Airport, where you’ll arrive in the late afternoon or early evening depending on traffic and road conditions. Your guide will assist you with the final logistics to ensure a smooth transition as you prepare to board your outbound flight.

As your safari and trekking journey comes to a close, take a moment to reflect on the unforgettable experiences—from standing face to face with the gentle giants of Bwindi, to conquering the snowcapped peaks of Rwenzori. You’ve walked paths carved through ancient rainforests, stood above the clouds, and immersed yourself in the wild soul of Uganda. This journey will linger in your heart long after the mountains fade into the horizon—a true expedition of spirit, strength, and raw natural beauty.
