1 Day Materuni Waterfall and Coffee Farm Tour

Our one-day Materuni village tour includes a walk through the village, a guided hike to a waterfall, a coffee tour, a show of traditional Chagga dance, a taste of local Chagga food, and a stop at Kikuletwa Hot Springs.

Overview

1 Day Materuni Waterfall and Coffee Farm Tour

The Chagga people live in Materuni village, which is in the Uru area. The village is in the northern part of Moshi town, just 15 km from the middle of town. Materuni town is the last village before you enter Kilimanjaro National Park. It is also about 1800 meters above sea level.

The first part of the tour is a 40-minute walk to a 90-meter-high waterfall. Along the way, you will learn about the economy, farming, culture, and wildlife of the Materuni town as well as the plants and animals that live nearby. There is a beautiful place to swim, so please bring a swimsuit and a towel. You are welcome to use the natural pool.

After that, you’ll go back to the village and eat lunch with some Chagga food. Chagga food usually includes rice or pilau, veggies from the area, and lots of fruits from the village. Additionally, you will learn about the traditional way of handling coffee and help make organic Materuni coffee.

You will also learn how to grow, dry, and roast coffee here. You can listen, dance, and sing with the Chagga people while you make your own coffee. This is a fun way to get to know the culture of the area.

Your trip goes on to the Kikuletwa Hot Springs, which is about an hour and twenty minutes away after the coffee walk in Materuni. There are hot springs near the town of Rundugai. They are called Kikuletwa Hot Springs or Chemka Hot Springs.

Kikuletwa’s water is not really “hot,” even though they are called “hot springs.” Instead, it is cool and relaxing because Kilimanjaro feeds the water source. The turquoise water here is very clear and makes you want to take a bath, so don’t forget your swimming suit.

Day 1: Materuni Waterfall and Coffee Farm Tour

8:30 a.m.: Our English-speaking guide will pick you up in Moshi and drive you to Materuni Village. When you get there, you’ll need to sign up at the village office before the trip starts.

9:00 AM: First, you’ll go to the waterfalls, which are a 40-minute walk away. Your guide will tell you about the Chagga culture, village life, and the plants and animals in the area as you go. The views are truly stunning, and if you’re lucky, you might even be able to see Kilimanjaro’s peak.

You’ll see that the waterfalls are more than 80 meters high when you get there. Don’t forget your swimwear because the pool at the base of the waterfall looks like a great place to cool off.

At 1300 hours, you and your guide will slowly make your way back to Materuni village, where you will enjoy a traditional Chagga lunch. You will also have the chance to try our famous banana beer, which you should not miss!

But that’s not all. Next, the coffee experience is ready for you. You will learn how to grow coffee, dry it, roast it, and process it here. Also, you’ll be asked to help with the

Chagga songs and dances are usually played while the coffee is being ground. This is a fun way to learn about the culture of the area. You can enjoy the coffee you made and the view of the jungle around you before you say goodbye.

1500 Hours: Your trip goes on to the Kikuletwa Hot Springs after the coffee tour in Materuni. The ride to the hot springs is about an hour and a half long and goes over some rough terrain. We first drive by sugar cane farms and then reach the African scrubland. Along the way, we see dried river beds, baobab trees, and acacia trees.

The Kikuletwa hot springs, which are also called Chemka Hot Springs, are one of the most beautiful places to relax in Tanzania. They are close to the village of Rundugai. There are palm and fig trees with winding roots all around the small pond, and the blue water is so clear that it makes you want to take a bath.

Kikuletwa’s water is not really “hot,” even though they are called “hot springs.” Instead, it is cool and relaxing because Kilimanjaro feeds the water source. Take your time and enjoy a lovely afternoon however you choose. You can lie in the sun and relax, talk to locals at the small bar, or go swimming.

The hot springs close in the late afternoon, just before sunset. We return to Moshi in a calm state.
