Day 1: Twin Lakes Cycling Tour

Our one-day tour of the Twin Lakes will begin this morning at 8:00 am from Musanze. There are two lakes in northern Rwanda. They are at the base of Mountain Muhabura, not far from the border with Uganda. At the edges of the two lakes, Lake Burera and Lake Ruhondo, there are high hills and big waterfalls.

In the background, the Virunga volcanic mountains make for stunning views. There is a 1-kilometer-wide strip of land between Lake Burera and Lake Ruhondo. Water flows from Lake Burera to Lake Ruhondo, and the two lakes cover a total area of 2,800 hectares.

It will be 34 km long when the tour ends in Musanze town, which is 17 km away. The tour goes through small towns and trade hubs. People in the area will be happy to talk to you along the way. For example, the kids love seeing bicycles go by, so they’ll be eager to say hello.

When we get to the twin lakes, we’ll take a boat across to the lovely Ruhondo resort for lunch. You can get fresh Rwandan coffee and fresh fish from the lake. You can also enjoy views of the five peaks of the Virunga mountains, which are Muhabura, Gahinga, Sabyinyo, Karisimbi, and Bisoke.
