Situated in the Virunga Mountains, Mount Bisoke boasts a classic conical shape and is renowned for its summit crater lake, approximately 400 meters in diameter. The volcano straddles the border between Rwanda and the Democratic Republic of the Congo, with its peak located in Rwanda. The hike traverses diverse vegetation zones, including bamboo forests, Hagenia-Hypericum woodlands, and alpine meadows, offering hikers a chance to experience the rich biodiversity of the region.

Volcanoes National Park

As part of the larger Virunga Conservation Area, Volcanoes National Park is a sanctuary for the endangered mountain gorilla and golden monkeys. The park encompasses five of the eight volcanoes in the Virunga range, including Bisoke. Beyond its wildlife, the park is steeped in history, being the base for Dian Fossey’s pioneering gorilla research at the Karisoke Research Center.

The ascent to Mount Bisoke’s summit typically takes between 3 to 6 hours, depending on fitness levels and weather conditions, with the descent requiring an additional 2 to 3 hours. While the hike is considered moderate, it involves navigating steep, muddy, and occasionally slippery trails, especially during the rainy season. Hikers are advised to be in good physical condition and to consider hiring local porters for assistance.

Day 1: Bisoke Volcano Hike

Early in the morning, a guide will pick you up at either your hotel or Kigali International Airport. After that, you’ll go to the Mali province in the Volcanoes National Park. At 7:00 AM, you can get a briefing and sign up for a hike at the Kinigi Park offices.

The starting place for hiking Mount Bisoke is farther away from the briefing point, and you’ll have to drive on rough, rocky ground to get there. Once you get to the starting place, you and the mountain guides and porters will hike up the mountain.

It takes three to five hours to walk. When you get to the top, take a look at the beautiful views and take as many pictures as you can. You will meet our guide at the starting point when you get back. After lunch, go back to Kigali or your hotel.
